Karol Turner: A Passionate Advocate for Children's Dignity and Success
Karol Turner epitomizes a lifelong commitment to community service. From her upbringing in a household where volunteering was ingrained in daily life, Karol's path has led her through eight years of unwavering dedication to the nonprofit sector. Currently serving as the Program Manager for Note in the Pocket, Turner is committed to ensuring that every child is dressed for academic success.
Raised by a single mom of two girls, Karol's childhood was steeped in a culture of community engagement. Accompanying her mother to volunteer activities from a tender age, Karol absorbed a profound sense of responsibility and empathy for those in need. Her mother's extensive involvement in the nonprofit sector served as the bedrock for Karol's journey of service to the community.
Prior to joining Note in the Pocket, Karol devoted eight years to Raleigh Rescue Mission, where she served as a child advocate case worker. Her tenure at Raleigh Rescue Mission solidified her passion for supporting children facing adversity. It was during this time that Karol became acquainted with Note in the Pocket as a clothing referral partner. Struck by the impactful role of Note in the Pocket in providing clothing to children, she decided to transition directly into working with the organization.
In her role as Program Manager, Karol plays a pivotal role in coordinating volunteers, overseeing their activities, and actively contributing to the organization's clothing drives. Her responsibilities include ensuring that every child receives clean, well-kept, and dignified clothing through a meticulous three-step process—no holes, stains, or excessively worn items. Karol emphasizes the organization's unique commitment to providing at least two weeks' worth of clothing, thereby promoting dignity and love within the community.
Reflecting on her journey, one of Karol's most poignant moments occurred while distributing Note in the Pocket's clothing to children at Raleigh Rescue Mission. Witnessing the immediate boost in confidence and self-esteem among these children underscored the transformative power of appropriate clothing in an academic setting. Even at Note in the Pocket, the organization consistently receives heartfelt letters from children expressing gratitude for the positive impact on their lives.
Passionate about addressing clothing insecurity as a crucial factor in a student's academic success, Karol stresses that “having good clothes and avoiding embarrassment in school significantly impacts a child's ability to engage with class, teachers, and peers, ultimately influencing their future success.” For her, the mission extends beyond providing clothes; it involves unlocking the potential for a bright and successful future through education.
The recent announcement of Note in the Pocket's new location in Durham has Karol envisioning a positive impact with expanded space to fulfill referrals and increased opportunities for community involvement. The organization's plans for additional locations in the future, with the aspiration of establishing a presence in every state, reflect Karol's optimism about the growth and development of Note in the Pocket. While anticipating unique opportunities and challenges in the new Durham community, she remains steadfast in her positive outlook.
Beyond her role at Note in the Pocket, Karol immerses herself in DIY projects and participates in a community modern dance company. While her time at Note in the Pocket has been relatively brief, she has already made creative contributions, such as decorating the Christmas tree and reorganizing sorting rooms to create a more vibrant and organized workspace.
In light of her background and experiences, Karol recognizes the transformative role of community involvement in shaping the lives of children and families. Emphasizing the importance of love and service, she envisions Note in the Pocket as an organization propelled by love, underscored by the remarkable story of anonymous founders who work and serve with profound commitment to the community.
Karol Turner, with her steadfast dedication and genuine passion, occupies a central role in Note in the Pocket's mission to clothe children with dignity and love. As a Raleigh native deeply connected to her community, she eagerly anticipates witnessing the organization's continued growth and the positive changes it will bring to the lives of countless children.

Letter To the Editor:
Nov. 21, 2023
Dear Mr. Frumin,
In the spirit of responsible clothing disposal, we encourage readers to consider donating their gently used items to organizations like ours, where old clothes become a source of hope and transformation for children in need. Clothing insecurity is a silent crisis affecting 2 out of every 5 children in the U.S. The lack of seasonally appropriate clothing has profound effects on children, impacting their education and overall well-being. Children experiencing clothing insecurity are more likely to miss school, fall behind academically, and face behavioral problems.
At Note in the Pocket, we have witnessed a staggering increase in requests for clothing, with the number almost doubling in the past two years. By addressing clothing insecurity, Note in the Pocket empowers students to overcome these obstacles and thrive academically and socially. Our goal is to provide every child with the tools they need to embark on a journey toward education and career success, breaking the cycle of generational poverty.
We believe that the public's awareness and support are crucial in tackling this issue effectively. We urge readers to consider donating clothing, volunteering their time, or supporting our cause financially. Together, we can make a significant difference in the lives of these children, ensuring that they have the opportunities they need to succeed. Thank you for your attention to this pressing matter. Sincerely,
Darcy Hall
